St Patrick's Green Topping Out Ceremony

This month, St Patrick’s Green hit a major milestone as the concrete structure was completed. This was such an exciting moment for our new Retirement Village and Aged Care Home in Kogarah, so we celebrated by having a Topping Out Ceremony to formally mark the occasion. Everyone dressed in their finest hard hats and vests, and made their way to the roof of The O’Farrell building which is 12 storeys high. We were lucky to have a sunny afternoon, so the views from the roof were stunning – we could see all the way from Sydney, across Botany Bay, and then down to the boats in the Georges River and Cronulla.

Dave Ghannoum from Brookfield Multiplex, the construction company looking after St Patrick’s Green, kicked-off the ceremony. He then welcomed Greengate Director, Howard Smith and Greengate CEO, Chris Rigby to talk. In the background behind the podium, was the Sydney skyline and attendees of the Topping Out ceremony got to appreciate what a fantastic spot St Patrick’s Green Retirement Village is in. Bishop Terry Brady, from the Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney, took the stage and said a blessing, which was a beautiful touch to the ceremony.

To commemorate the day, the final section of concrete was poured and Howard, Greville Ingham and Monsignor Micek from St Patrick’s Church next door, pressed their hand prints into it. If you ever get onto the roof of St Patrick’s Green, be sure to check out this quirky feature! The end of the ceremony was marked with a big tree being lifted onto the roof by the crane, and Brookfield Multiplex presented commemorative trowels to Greengate and St Patrick's Church.

The Topping Out Ceremony was a special afternoon, and it was nice to reflect on how far this project has come over the past few years. In the images, we have included a newspaper clipping from August 2015, when we first turned the sod and Monsignor Micek blessed the soil. It’s amazing to think that in just a year and a half, St Patrick’s Green has evolved from a cleared piece of land to a high-rise structure soon to be housing 105 Independent Living Apartments, as well as a 4 level Boutique Aged Care Home.
